Why it needs cleaning

Damp, dust and Queensland heat.

The indoor coil runs cold, so it sweats. In humid weather that moisture holds onto dust, and mould and algae can grow on the coil, the fan and the vents. The fan then blows air across all of it. A unit that runs most of the day builds up faster.

Signs it's time for a clean

  • A musty or damp smell when it starts up
  • Weak airflow, or the room takes longer to cool
  • Dust, dark spots or mould on the vents and covers
  • It hasn't been cleaned in the last year or so

What builds up

  • Dust and lint matted across the filters
  • A grey film over the coil fins
  • Mould spots on filters and louvres
  • Sludge and rust marks behind the vent grille

What we do on the day

The clean, step by step.

A wash bag goes under the unit to catch the run-off and protect your wall and floor. Then the work goes in this order.

  1. Covers off. The front cover and grille come off so the coil and fan barrel can be reached.
  2. Filters and indoor coil. The filters are washed and the coil is cleaned.
  3. Chemical wash. A wash made for air conditioners, followed by sanitising and a deodoriser.
  4. Covers deep cleaned. The covers and louvres are scrubbed, not just wiped.
  5. Outdoor unit. The outdoor unit is cleaned too.
  6. Rebuild and test. Everything goes back together and the unit is temperature tested.

Questions

Aircon cleaning FAQ.

How often should an air conditioner be cleaned?

As a guide, once a year suits many homes. A unit that runs most of the day, or a home with pets or allergy sufferers, can need it more often. If you notice a musty smell or weaker airflow, get it cleaned sooner.

Why does my split system smell musty?

In humid weather the indoor coil gets cold and sweats. Dust that sticks to it stays damp, mould and algae can grow, and the fan blows the smell into the room. Cleaning the coil, fan barrel and covers removes what has built up.

What's the difference between washing the filters and a full clean?

The filters catch dust at the front of the unit, and you can wash them yourself. Check your manual for how often. The coil and fan sit behind the covers, which is where heavier build-up collects. Reaching them means taking the unit apart, which is what a full clean covers.

Which suburbs do you clean air conditioners in?

We service North Brisbane, including Kurwongbah, Petrie, Kallangur, Murrumba Downs, Griffin, North Lakes, Dakabin, Narangba, Lawnton, Strathpine and Brendale, and the suburbs around them. If you're not sure we cover you, call or send an enquiry.

Do you clean every type of air conditioner?

Split systems are what we clean most. If yours is a different type, such as a ducted system, call before booking and we'll tell you whether we can help.

Who does the work?

ZapSquad is owner-operated, so the licensed tradesperson you speak to is the one doing the job. We hold a Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence (No. 1513541) and a Refrigerant Handling Licence, and we are insured.

Do you only clean air conditioners?

Air-con cleaning is our main focus. We also install air conditioning and do electrical work, including fault finding, power points, lighting, ceiling fans and smoke alarms.
